PREMIER LEAGUE CUP FINAL

Littleport Town were denied by a last gasp goal in their Premier League Cup Final clash with Over Sports.

Over were on top during a goalless first half, and 'Port lost influential midfielder Sean Ambrose at half-time as they attempted to get a foot-hold on the game.

The pattern of the tie continued until the 70th minute, when 'Port striker Nigel Smith was suddenly allowed a clear path towards the Over penalty area.

Smith's initial effort was stopped by the goalkeeper, but his follow-up attempt found the net and 'Port looked as if they would take the trophy by virtue of that goal.

The clock ticked past 90 minutes and 'Port were still clinging to their slender advantage.

Another five minutes went by, and as spectators began wondering how long the referee would extend the match Over finally produced an equalising goal to take the tie into extra-time.

"We felt just so deflated," said 'Port manager Dave Cullum afterwards, "because we had defended so well."

Over then grabbed a winning goal in extra-time, and all Cullum had left was to congratulate his opponents on their dominant performance.

"They were the better side," Cullum admitted, adding: "But it wasn't much of a game to be honest. It didn't feel like a cup final for us - it felt like an away league game."

Soham Town Rangers Reserves looked outside contenders for promotion until the closing weeks of the season, when they won just one of their last six games to fade into sixth.

Their main problem was a lack of consistency, and they only managed to take a single point from either Wickhambrook or Needingworth United, the teams who eventually occupied the top two positions.

Wickhambrook came with a wet sail to overhaul Needingworth and Wisbech Town Reserves for the title, their late-season run including two odd-goal victories at Soham's expense.

Senior Division A may not be quite as strong next time around however, and there is every reason to consider that Soham's second string can make it back into the top flight of Cambs Junior football.
