Sunday, the first day of the season, was a day for the spectators at Ely Sailing Club.

There were white horses scudding across the pits and only three helms ventured out.

The rescue boat man, Frank Piper, celebrating his 70th birthday, was on constant watch, but the laser helms managed to right themselves after their numerous capsizes.

Two handicap races and a class race were sailed but the line honours were the same in all the races.

Simon Leek, a new member to Ely SC, sailing his Solo took the honours in all the races, followed by Jamie and John. Jamie Gallagher and John Cant were sailing Laser Radials and enjoyed themselves but were frequently overwhelmed by the numerous gusts.

Meanwhile, other members were manning a stand at the Isle of Ely Rowing Club's Exhibition, in Jubilee Gardens. Commodore Clare Christan accepted two certificates from Mayor Bryant Watson, in recognition of the grants that had been awarded to the Club from Awards for All and Local Network Funding for promoting Youth Sailing.
