A BUSY fortnight of sailing at the Ely Sailing Club marked the start of the key summer season with a number of flagship races taking place
On June 13 the second annual Youth Regatta took place, with nine eager young competitors battling it our for the top places.
Five handicap races were sailed with a number of boats in contention to steal the honours late on. Ultimately though, it was the polished teamwork of Martin Mills and Molly Wells sailing an Enterprise that stole the show though as they sealed an impressive victory.
Ely's Jack Knight, sailing a Topper, also acquitted himself well to take third place overall.
On June 20 the ladies of Ely competed for the Ladies Plate, a hotly contested event which saw three of the clubs female teams go head-to-head for the trophy.
Hannah Wilcox sailing a Laser, took an early lead in the first race and finished well ahead of Susie Sallis and Karen Knight in an Enterprise. Christine Levett and Emma Rees in a Gull came third.
In the second race Jill Sallis and Kathy Pearcey sailed the club Wayfarer but they only finished in front of the Gull. The overall winner was Hannah Wilcox with Susie and Karen runners up.
In the partners race meanwhile, five pairings in an assortment of boats raced for nearly an hour, for the title of top club couple. Even though Andy and Hannah Wilcox sailing an RS400, finished nearly five minutes ahead of John and Julie Wells in an Enterprise, they were easily beaten by the Wells o corrected time.
Result. 1. John and Julie Wells. 2. Andy and Hannah Wilcox. 3. Niall and Kathy Pearcey. 4. Gary and Liz Ungless. 5. Kevin and Christine Levett.
