TEENAGER Ryan Howell met his hero, three-time world champion Ron Haslam, and raised more than £200 so his football team could have an away kit.

When Ely City under-14s were unable to find a sponsor 13-year-old Ryan decided to raise funds himself.

Ryan, who lives in Stuntney and attends City of Ely Community College, has been mad about motorcycle racing since he had his first motorbike at the age of five and was sponsored by friends and family members to take on the On Track course at Donington Park. He was the youngest person to take the course, which is run by The Honda Ron Haslam Race School of Excellence.

After a gruelling four hours Ryan had to demonstrate essential skills and disciplines required to be a safe racer, including breaking into a corner, holding a racing line, understanding of on-track health and safety.

He also had to demonstrate his overall confidence in handling a bike.

After successful completion of the course, Ryan is now certified to race, and he described the day as "the best of my entire life".

Ely City under-14s are expecting to receive their new strip this week and Ryan will be handing over his cheque for £208 before their match on Sunday.

n Ryan is now hoping to get into competitive motorcycle racing and anyone with advice as to how to go about this should contact his mother, Sonia, on 01353 666038 or 07743 683957.
