A RECORD number of entrants donned their running shoes at the weekend to take part in the annual Sutton Beast race.

The race, which earned its hellish title courtesy of the gruelling terrain over which it is run, is seven punishing miles long and this year attracted some 94 entrants, all eager to conquer the infamous beast.

First home amongst the large field was Paul Holley, who made a nonsense of the stifling heat to register a record-breaking time of 37mins 53secs, a full 43 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor and Ely Runner, Steve Pettit.

Holley and Pettit went toe-to-toe for much of the race, jostling to establish a decisive lead, before Holley finally broke loose from his pursuer to record the win. John Manlow, also of Ely Runners, finished third 40mins 42secs for the second time in succession.

In the ladies race meanwhile, Ursula White of Newmarket Joggers finished in 49mins 46secs to take top spot. Michelle Prior, Ramsey Road Runners was again second in 50mins 16secs whilst Frances Cooke, March Athletic Club, was third in a time of 52mins 21secs.

As a result of the race's success the Sutton Feast Week committee have been able to make a per capita donation to Sue Ryder, the charity supported by the series.
