Ely Tigers carried on their impressive start to the season by dominating Swaffham in a comfortable 41-6 victory on Saturday.

Ely sought to take advantage of strong winds and pinned the opposition to their try line in the game’s early stages.

The Tigers were camped in Swaffham territory and Ely opened the scoring after Swaffham’s Ed Fahy threw a stray pass to man of the match Paul Dewey who darted round two defenders to touch down in the corner for an unconverted try. Shortly afterwards Dewey was in for his brace when Joel Scott Paul took out the last defender and offloaded to him to score, with Matt McCarthy adding the arrears to send the Tigers into a comfortable lead.

Swaffham saw a short spell of possession and Ely were penalised for offside. Swaffham decided to go for the posts and slotted three points to reduce the deficit.

Just before the end of the half, the opposition were penalised and the Tigers kicked for the corner. A rolling maul was formed and stopped short of the line, Dan Coulson switched the play to the blindside and John Dibb had an easy run in.

Ely were against the wind in the second half but that didn‘t stop the points flowing.

Nathan Brooks scored two tries; his first came from a rolling maul formed from a line-out, his second was great showcase of strength and pace.

Brooks took the ball on the wing and barged through several defenders, giving a hand-off to a few, throwing a dummy to the last defender and touching down for a converted try.

Swaffham kicked back and the ball didn‘t travel ten metres and the Tigers opted for the scrum on the halfway line.

The ball was then shipped to Alex Milne who stepped through the defence and offloaded to Sam Benzie who crashed over the line for a try as Ely continued to dominate.

John Dibb was the third Tiger to get a brace of tries when McCarthy did a switch move and Dibb sprinted thirty metres, through several defenders and dived under the posts for a converted try.

Swaffham added another penalty to bring the final score to 41-6 and Ely coasted home to victory.

The Tigers’ second consecutive win sees them stay second in the Greene King IPA Eastern Counties 1 league table, seven points behind unbeaten Wymondham.

Ely will be looking to close the points gap when they travel to Mersea Island for their next game on Saturday November 28.

Last weekend also brought success for Ely Tigers under 7s, who fielded four teams against Royston.

The young Tigers, who have been training together for over two months, showcased their skills in tagging, passing and sportsmanship, with Ely’s Taigh and Reuben scooping the week’s players of the week titles after showing improvement and growing confidence in all areas.
