Ely’s marathon wait for a first win this season finally ended on Saturday with victory at Clacton.

The Robins raced into a 4-0 lead in the first half and survived a spirited fight back from the hosts in the second period to record their maiden win in 13 games and their first points of the season.

But celebrations were marred somewhat but a serious injury to striker Ashley Walter, who fractured his skull in a clash of heads early in the game.

Walter had to be rushed to hospital following the incident but has since made a full recovery.

Ely’s director of football, Sam Turner said: “It’s been a long time coming but we finally recorded our first win of the season at Clacton.

“I am so pleased for our supporters and players as this has been on the horizon for the past few weeks, every one of our squad is united as a group and we will continue to do the right things for our club.

“It’s a great feeling to gain that first but we will not stand still and we now need to push on a gain some consistency in our results as the performances have been improving all season.

“The boys deserve the praise for Saturday’s performance, its a big relief to all at the club and we will now look to push on and add some more points on the board.”

It was Walter who opened the scoring for the Robins with a header inside the first few minutes of the match, though he was soon forced off after clashing heads.

James Carmen doubled Ely’s lead minutes after Walter’s opener and made it three midway through the half. Substitute Richard Gammon then netted to make it 4-0 to Ely at half-time.

Aaron Condon and Louie Newland netted for Clacton in the second half but Ely held on for the win.

On Tuesday night, Ely were dumped out of the Thurlow Nunn League Cup by First Division pace-setters Saffron Walden Town, losing 3-1.

The Robins return to action on Saturday when they host Gorleston at the Unwin Ground. Kick off is 3pm.
