A LATE equaliser at the Unwin Ground denied Ely City all three points in a thrilling encounter with Newmarket.
The Robins held a slender lead going into the last five minutes before newly-promoted Newmarket were awarded a penalty and duly converted to force the 1-1 draw.
Talisman Robbie Mason had handed Ely the lead after 25 minutes as the home side broke quickly from a Newmarket attack. With five minutes to go the Robins looked to have done enough for the win only for the referee to award a spot-kick when Lee Pacey clattered through an opposition striker.
Newmarket's Steve Bugg converted to earn the visitors a share of the spoils. Ely's next game is at home to Kirkley and Pakefield on Saturday.
