ELY City’s match against CRC scheduled for tonight (Wednesday) has been postponed following the death of Robins committee member Doug Cranwell.

Mr Cranwell, 83, a life member of the club and regular at home games, was driving on the A142 near Chatteris on Sunday when his car left the road and crashed into a garden.

The 83-year-old was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge but later died of his injuries.

An announcement on the club’s website read: “It is with sadness that the football club has the painful duty to announce the death of life member Doug Cranwell, who passed away today Tuesday, September 28

“As a mark of respect the game versus CRC has been postponed. The game versus Kirkley and Pakefield on Saturday, October 2 will go ahead when tributes and acknowledgements of Doug’s long association with the Club will be remembered.”

It took a special strike from defender Adam Dalby to secure the Robins a point against high flyers Great Yarmouth Town on Saturday.

Despite miserable conditions on the Norfolk coast, it was the Robins who struck first through makeshift left back Dalby but they couldn’t hold out for the win as the home side equalised with 20 minutes to go.

The point leaves Alan Alsop’s side in 14th place in the Ridgeons Premier League albeit with a number of games-in-hand on the sides above them.
