Football Ely City 1 Newmarket Town 2

Sam Turner says Ely City deserved more from their derby defeat to rivals Newmarket on Tuesday night.

After falling behind to a first-half penalty, the Robins battled back to pull level with the visitors only for a late lapse in concentration to cost them a share of the spoils.

The defeat leaves Ely pointless from their opening six matches and second bottom of the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division.

Captain James Seymour was on target for Ely early in the second half, pulling the Robins level with a header from close range.

Director of football, Sam Turner said: “To say the players are disappointed would be an understatement. We totally matched our opponents man-for-man and the commitment and desire was fantastic.

“Despite this run of defeats every game we have played this season, apart from one occasion, we have more than matched our opponents and could easily be sitting comfortable in mid-table.

“We had a tremendous crowd last night, the biggest of the season, and speaking to fans after the match they can see that the club is going in the right direction.

“Brady has a very close bunch of players who continue to work hard and compete in every match and the points will soon appear on the board. Everyone from the chairman downward knows what has gone on behind the scenes and we are very happy that the future of our club is in a stable condition.

“I personally would like to thank the fans who supported us last night, and I can assure all the supporters that Brady and his staff will continue to work hard and turn these excellent performances into wins.”

Turner also confirmed that two new faces had been added to the Robins squad, Nick Bell and Dan Jeffrey, with the duo making their debuts for the club on Tuesday night,

This weekend sees Ely take a break from league action as they travel to Thetford Town in the FA Vase. Kick off is 3pm.
