ELY City boss Denis Lightning says Tuesday night’s fixture against Soham Town Rangers will help him sort out his starting line up for the weekend’s league opener at Felixstowe.

The Robins’ boss says he has got six of his starting 11 decided following a series of pre-season friendlies and hopes that he will be able to nail on the remaining five after Tuesday’s Unwin Cup clash with rivals Soham.

“It will be a good test for us,” said Lightning, “The Unwin Cup is supposed to be a friendly but it rarely turns out that way and I think it will give Alan and I a good idea of our starting line up for the Felixstowe game on Saturday.”

Lightning was speaking after a 2-2 draw with Stowmarket on Saturday in the Robins penultimate friendly of the pre-season before their Ridgeons League campaign gets underway on August 7.

The Robins twice took the lead thanks to goals from Nick Impey and Grant Robins, but regular changes in personal throughout the match let Stowmarket back in to the game and ultimately saw them come away with a draw.

“If the game had been all about the result I would have left things as they were after we took the lead and we would probably have won by two or three goals but pre-season is all about trying new things and giving players time on the ball and that is what we did.”

Ely’s Unwin Cup clash with Soham takes place on Tueaday evening (August 3) at the Unwin Ground from 7.45pm.
