ELY City ladies delivered a clinical dose of retribution as they triumphed 8-1 over title rivals Peterborough.

Irritated by a narrow 3-2 to Peterborough back in October last year, Ely were keen to settle a long-standing score and did so in consummate fashion with a victory that sees them go 12 points clear at the top.

The rout started in earnest as Chanre Bond opened the scoring after just three minutes to mark the home side's intentions. The lead was doubled just after the 10 minute mark when Bond was on hand once more, slotting home following some sterling work from Gemma Voutt.

Peterborough were far from out of the match however, and they hauled themselves back into the contest with a breakaway goal just after 18 minutes. Instead of spurring them on though, the goal served to rile Ely further and they added another score not long after as Voutt netted her second.

Ely were well in the ascendency by the middle of the half and added one more before the whistle when Bond smashed home following a short corner.

The home side were keen not to allow Peterborough to find some momentum in the early stages of the second-half and worked hard to get the next score as Voutt slotted home after being put through by Dani Fletcher.

Sustained pressure from the home side was producing good chances, and, as apposed to recent weeks were shots were going awry, Ely were able to consistently find the net and did so on a further three occasions before full-time as the demoralised visitors became increasingly at odds in defence.

The win sees Ely cement their place at the top of the table with just four games remaining this season. A win in two weeks time at St Ives would all but guarantee them the title and promotion to the East Hockey League system.
