A RECORD number of runners took to the streets of Little Downham last week for the Ely Runners annual 10k handicap race.

A stellar field of 60 runners made it to the start line for the popular race, a high-octane dash around the small village, with home runner Craig Holgate emerging victorious.

Holgate fought off stiff competition from a number of his club mates to take the trophy, breaking the tape in a blistering 34mins 22secs, a more than impressive time that saw him record an average 5mins 32secs per mile.

First lady home on the day was youngster Daisy Glover, who recorded a sprightly time of 36mins 45secs. Last year's winner Stuart Mitchell, meanwhile relinquished his grip on the trophy as he came home in 1h 25mins.

First home in the handicap race meanwhile was guest runner Thomas Clare who narrowly fought off determined competition from Ely Runner Heidi Fochtmann, who came home in a new personal best time of 47mins 05secs and nearly 3min inside her handicap time
