RECORD BREAKER: A student at King's School, Ely, celebrated his 16th birthday with a record-breaking rowing performance in the annual Boston Marathon.

James Scott broke the long-standing J16 sculls record when he completed the gruelling 50km race from Lincoln to Boston in a time of 4 hours 9 minutes and 34 seconds.

It was a successful return to the event for James who broke the J15 record on the same course last year.

His classmate Laurence Dugdale competed in the novice men's class and completed the course in 4 hours 11 minutes 44 seconds. He finished 20 minutes ahead of a field of 14 more experienced scullers.

Michael Hawes and Charles Heard won the J15 double sculls crossing the line in 4 hours 53 minutes 42 seconds while Richard Glasspole and Tom Oliver finished third in the J16 doubles in 5 hours 10 minutes.

There was also success for the boys' coaches, with Jerry Dale winning the veteran's class by eight seconds, and Chris Smith - newly appointed boatman and coach to King's Boat Club - won his senior class.
