King’s Ely Junior’s golden girl, Rebecca Daniel, has become the first ever school athlete to win gold medals in successive years at the National Prep Schools Athletics Championships.

Running in the 800m, Rebecca, 13, gradually reeled in the girls ahead of her to win comfortably in Birmingham in a personal best time of 2mins 20.67secs.

Head of athletics at the school, Richard Powell, said: “This is a tremendous achievement by Rebecca, who has shown great dedication over the past two years.

“If she continues with athletics and maintains her current determined approach, she will certainly achieve many more successes in the future. She has been a joy to watch as she has progressed during her time in King’s Ely Junior.”

Ben Marshall and Billy McGrath, both Year 6 pupils, also competed at the national event. Billy finished a very creditable eighth in the discus and Ben recorded a personal best performance in the hurdles.
