SOHAM Town Rangers will apply for promotion to the Ryman League.

The club committee unanimously agreed to put in an application, which, if successful, would see them take on the likes of AFC Sudbury and Bury Town.

The news has delighted manager Ian Benjamin, who hit out the club's lack of ambition last season when they decided against making an application.

Benjamin, who watched his side stuff mid-table Woodbridge Town 9-1 on Saturday, said: "I told the chairman and committee three years ago when I joined Soham that I wanted to take the club as far as I can. I'm an ambitious man and I think it's important to set high standards, both in football and in life.

"I feel I've built a really strong squad here and can take the club far."

An application must be sent by December 31 which satisfies league officials that the club fulfils certain criteria with regards to facilities and finances.

Soham must also finish top or hope a side above them doesn't apply.

Benjamin said: "We're playing superb football which deserves to be watched by bigger crowds."

Inspired by 20-year-old midfielder, Aaaron Turner, Soham reduced Woodbridge to the biggest defeat in their history.

A 20-yard Paul Hart drive gave the visitors a fourth-minute lead but Michael Simpson equalised a minute later.

Charles Libam made it 2-1 and Darren Jimson cut in from the left wing to extend Soham's lead after 20 minutes.

Andy Furnell latched on to a misplaced backward header to score on the half-hour and the same man slipped the ball through to Paul Jones who made it 5-1 before the break.

Three minutes into the second half, Furnell made it 6-1 and his perfectly timed through-ball allowed Libam to score his second just before the hour.

Club captain Peter Hinde came on to make his first league appearance in more than a year to play the last 30 minutes, before Turner completed the rout with two well-taken headers.
