RIDGEONS LEAGUE CUP

FIRST ROUND

Mildenhall Town 3

Soham Town Rangers 0

SOHAM were brought crashing down to earth with a humbling thrashing at neighbours Mildenhall on Tuesday night.

Rangers received the Ridgeons Team of the Month award before claiming their eighth successive league win 4-0 against Harwich and Parkeston - on Saturday.

And with Mildenhall boss Trevor Munns' comments in the press about the Ridgeons League Cup not being a priority, many Soham fans were expecting an easy ride at Recreation Way.

But it looks like a case of mind games with Munns fielding a full-strength side featuring former Soham star Matt Robinson.

The fired-up hosts dominated the opening period.

They were confident with the ball and relentlessly hassled and harried when Soham won possession.

The persistent Matty Clements capitalised on some poor defending to convert a low cross after 12 minutes.

Robinson ran at his old team mates every time he got the ball and Midenhall doubled their lead in the after 22 minutes when Craig Hammond finished from 10 yards.

Rangers showed little response and desperately lacked a cutting edge.

Soham showed more urgency at the start of the second half.

But after 52 minutes Rangers had a penalty appeal turned down and a quick break finished with striker Lee Clift outpacing Martin Bromwich and rounding the goalkeeper to score a decisive third goal.

Soham moved to a 4-3-3 formation for the final 20 minutes.

Substitute Paul Jones carved out an opportunity for Charles Libam in the final minute but much like the Soham performance the striker's finish was woefully off the mark.
