Preliminary Round

SOHAM’S lamentable run of form finally came to an end on Saturday as they secured a 2-0 win at Waltham Abbey.

The Greens came into the match in the midst of a nine-game winless run but there was no sign of their recent woes against Abbey as they notched up their maiden victory this season courtesy of goals from Scott Carter and Deakan Napier.

The win sees Ian Benjamin’s men move through to the first qualifying round of the competition where they will play host to former conference side Grays Athletic.

In a largely subdued opening half it was Waltham who had the first real chance with a shot from a corner seeming destined for the goal until midfielder Rogan McGeorge intervened to swipe clear.

With half-time approaching, Soham moved into the lead through Carter, who drilled home from close range after being played in by lively wide-man Napier.

The home side returned from the break with renewed intent and Soham custodian Dan Bircham was regularly called upon to claim high balls into the box as Abbey went in search of an equaliser.

Kieran Ogunkoya had an excellent chance to level proceedings not long after the break but could only head straight at Bircham when well placed.

Waltham continued to push forward in the final quarter of the game but for all their pressure it was Soham who managed to find the breakthrough as substitute Shawn Richards, played in Napier who made no mistake in slotting past Harry Ricketts in the home goal.
