ELY 2s late assault on the league gathered momentum after they picked up a crushing 41-3 win over Welwyn 3.

Ely wrestled control of the game from the first whistle and never looked out of control as they ran over a staggering six tries against an overawed Welwyn side.

The win sees Ely move up into fourth place in the Premiere League with a season defining match against table-topping Shelford on Saturday.

Ely took full advantage of the blustering tailwind from the kick off as they raced downfield like a rampaging herd, bent on recovering the ball. Their endeavour was soon rewarded as, following a period of mounting pressure, Magnus Woodroffe slid over to claim first blood.

Keen to maintain their irresistible starting pace, Ely were soon back in Welwyn's half and, capitalising on a number of turn-overs, managed to move further ahead courtesy of an Ivann Herdien score.

A second try from Herdien was ably complimented by a Jamie Russell score in the ensuing minutes to make the score a muscular 27-3 going in at half time.

Welwyn emerged a team downcast in the second half and their lack of ambition going forward only served to encourage the Ely forwards to continue their now regular attacks.

Just such an attack afforded Herdien his hat-trick of tries to mark a memorable game with the game's remaining scores added by Kev Houghton and Jamie Russell.
