Hockey Ely City 1 Ipswich 7
Ely City were on the receiving end of a masterclass display of hockey on Saturday as the youth and experience of Ipswich combined to tear through the heart of the Ely defence.
Ely started strongly and, with the return of Dan Jolly to the Ely midfield, produced some incisive runs into the Ipswich circle but failed to find the finishing touch. Ipswich soon opened up a four-goal lead with two open play goals and two simple short corner drag flicks placed into the bottom corner of the Ely goal.
The hosts did managed to pull a goal back through a slick passing move that provided Luke Massey with a simple tap in from a short distance. However, the continued Ipswich pressure in the second half further extended their lead to complete the rout without reply from Ely.
On Saturday, Ely travel to high-flying Sudbury in Division 2N and will need to strengthen the defence to avoid slipping to a similar defeat.
