Sailing Former Ely Sailor Club competitor Nick Copsey travelled to Plymouth with his University of Southampton team to compete in the University Fleet Racing Championships.

Sailing in the fast handicap fleet, Nick was competing against the some of the best university helms in the country, including three Royal Yachting Association podium potential sailors.

Saturday’s racing was cancelled due to gale force winds but, on Sunday, two races were sailed and Nick achieved a fifth and a second place, which put him third overall.

Finishing just behind two of the RYA’s most promising young sailors, including fellow Southampton team member Annabel Vose, who won the RYA young sailor of the year award in 2011 was a good start to Nick’s university sailing.

It was all the more remarkable considering that, as a fresher, he was unaware of the timescale for entering the competition and had to sail with a new crew who he had never sailed with before.
