WILBURTON'S steadfast determination with the bat saw them seal a one wicket victory after a nail-biting tussle with Sutton.

Opting to field first, Wilburton produced some excellent bowling to keep the visitors under pressure and, despite a decent start from the Sutton opening batsmen, reduced the visitors to 99-9 from their 40 overs.

Mick Garner (3-13) and Marcus Brook (3-12) led the way for the home side with some frustratingly tight bowling.

Needing a little under two and a half an over for victory, Wilburton's task should have been a simple one but, much like their opponents, Sutton excelled with the ball and wickets soon began to tumble.

At 56-7 the portents boded ill for the home side as Sutton ran riot, but the introduction of Lee Newton (27) to the crease changed the game and the bowler held firm to guide Wilburton home with just one wicket remaining.

Jeff Nuttall was the stand-out performer for Sutton with the ball as he collected 4-22.
