TIGHT bowling from Sawston II scuppered the City of Ely's hopes of 20/20 success this season after they lost out by 27 runs.

The 20-over knock-out cup match was played at an irresistible pace, with more than 250 racked up between the two sides but it was Sawston who came out on top as they managed to restrict Ely with a superb display of bowling.

Bowling first, Ely made some valuable early breakthroughs but came unstuck against with Sawston's Marc Pearson at the crease as he notched up four maximums and three boundaries on the way to a brisk 54. The 30 extras racked up also cost Ely dear as Sawston finished on 151 from their 20 overs.

Tom Sherwin's return of 2-25 from his four overs proved the outstanding display on the day with Chris Reay's 2-35 also invaluable.

Needing a little less than eight-an-over for victory, Ely began reasonably well with the bat but lost their way somewhat in the middle overs as Sawston turned the screw. A late flurry from Henry Baker (34*) boosted hopes of an unlikely win but the visitors ultimately ran out of overs as they finished on 124-6.
