BANGLADESHI Syfil Nury made a stunning return to the Ely side, smashing a century to help get their season off to a dream start.

Nury, who took last season off Saturday cricket for work commitments, raced to his 100 in 51 balls before he was bowled by M. Clivered.

Nury came in at No 4 to add to a fine start which saw openers Kevin Wells (46) and Andrew Smith (53) put them in a commanding position, before No. 3 Mark Hatcher went out for a duck.

New skipper Mark Abbott was the other chief run-maker, with 43.

He said: I've been trying to persuade Syfil to play for us for a while and it's great to have him back in the team."

Foster took his fine form into the bowling, taking three wickets in his seven overs at a cost of just 29 runs.

Hatcher made amends for his duck with a fine display of leg-spinning and became Ely's chief wicket-taker with four wickets. Sixteen-year-old Luke Emson made a strong claim for a regular place in the side, taking two wickets, and wicket-keeper Michael Tickner took two good stumps.

Abbott said: "It was a cracking all-round performance against a decent team who came down from division one last year.

"If we carry on like that and have good availability of players, we should be aiming for promotion."
