OLYMPIAN and British javelin record holder Goldie Sayers rewrote the UK Championships history books in Birmingham on Sunday when she became the first athlete to win eight national titles in a row.

Her win was a unique achievement in the 130 year history of the UK Championships.

The 27-year-old former King’s School Ely pupil threw 58.60 metres to retain the title.

The winning distance was a long way short of her 65.75m personal best, set when she came fourth and just 38cm short of a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“It’s obviously great to win and to get the record with my eighth title in a row,” she said as she left the track at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium but she revealed she had been impeded by an injury to her hip.

“Having finished the competition, the hip is really not feeling great and obviously it’s weighing on my mind.”

In the fortnight leading up to Sunday’s competition Goldie had thrown over 63 metres in competition at Bedford and at the European Team Championships in Norway she achieved an impressive second place ahead of the world number one, Russia’s Olympic silver medallist Mariya Abakumova.

While she awaits the result of a scan of her hip injury, Goldie is determined to stay positive about competing at the European Championships in Barcelona at the end of July.
