MILDENHALL SPEEDWAY by STEVEN BARTON

AFTER having a second meeting of the season abandoned following a horrific crash, Mildenhall are back to business as usual when the Redcar Bears come to town this Sunday.

Redcar have injury problems, but bring a strong side with Robbie Kessler signed for the injured Matt Tresarrieu and the guest facility available for the Bears No. 1, 1992 world champion, Gary Havelock.

Mildenhall manager Laurence Rogers said: "There's a bit of family rivalry on Sunday with my brother's Redcar Bears in town and there will be no brotherly love for 15 heats of speedway. My brother Gareth was the person who found the site at the South Tees Motorsport Park to bring speedway back to Middlesbrough after a long absence. So a win on Sunday is a must.

"The Bears side also contains American Chris Kerr, who was one of my original USA Dream Team rides from the first tour three years ago and I was instrumental in helping bring him into British Speedway. They have pulled off a bit of a coup bringing in West Row expert Robbie Kessler, with him notching 15 for Stoke last year here."

The Fen Tigers will bring in 17-year-old Nicki Glanz as the guest replacement for Jamie Smith but make a positional change putting him at No. 7 with Mark Thompson moving to No. 6.

Rogers said: "We are just one club of many who are after Glanz's signature. He is the son of former Fen Tiger Peter Glanz and therefore has good pedigree, but his form on track is doing the talking for him.

"I will continue to book guests for our future fixtures until I can find a replacement for the injured Jamie Smith.

"Redcar will be a tough battle I think but I believe that we have the beating of them."

What was building up into a classic encounter between Mildenhall and Rye House last Sunday was ended prematurely when the Rockets' Stuart Robson was involved in a horrifying smash with a fence.

Robson was conscious but visibly in pain, and, due to the delay, the Knockout Cup match was abandoned with Mildenhall leading but the result did not stand as heat 12 had not been reached.

n Mildenhall versus Redcar is on Sunday (May 5), at 4.30pm.
