Ely City boss Brady Stone has set his side a modest target ahead of this weekend’s clash with Great Yarmouth Town.

The Robins all but secured their Thurlow Nunn Premier Division status last weekend with a 3-1 win over Wivenhoe Town but will be mathematically be safe if they can take a point from this Saturday’s game at the Unwin Ground.

“If we can get a point this weekend then we’re guaranteed safety – and that’s with all the teams below us winning,” Stone said.

“We wanted to stay up and it’s been a remarkable season. We lost a few players at the start and began slowly but we’ve grown into the season and really hit the ground running since we had our FA Vase run.

“Yarmouth had a great start and are safe now. You always know what you’re going to get there – they work hard and play good football so we will have to be at our best.”

Ely edged closer to safety last weekend courtesy of two late strikes from Sam Reed and Luke Mansfield.

Spencer Saberton had earlier cancelled out a Wivenhoe opener, before Reed and Mansfield netted at the death to seal Ely’s first league win since March 10.

“We didn’t really get going early on but were a different team in the second half,” Stone said.

“We were much better, played some good football and got the two late goals.

“They did catch us on the break a few times but we kept going and we could have had double figures in the end.”

Stone also praised the club’s Under 18 side, who lifted the County Challenge Cup last Wednesday with a 1-0 win over Cambridge City.

“I’ve always said the Under 18s are too good to not win anything,” he said.

“The group has been together for a couple of years and they’re finishing their season really strongly.

“We’ve had Lewis Hook and Luke Mansfield make quite a few appearances for us this season and Lewis actually set Luke up for one of the goals on Saturday so they’ve been doing really well.

“It’s important that they all focus and continue to play well but that’s down to them.”
