Wilburton v March III

Wilburton won by nine runs

WILBURTON clinched their fifth league win in this low-scoring game.

Tony Jacobs, with 14 runs, was the only batsman to reach double figures, as Wilburton lost their last eight wickets for 14 and finished with a total of 56.

Callum Young for March took 4-1 in seven deliveries, supported by Goodfellow's 3-0 in 17 deliveries.

In reply, March were, at one stage, 5-7 with Wilburton bowlers Mick Garner (2-21) and Chris Hughes giving little away.

John Kabbery and James Mortlock added 24 for the seventh wicket, but on his return, Hughes took three wickets in five balls to finish with 7-12. Kabbery and Mortlock scored 20 of their side's total of 47.

March IV v Little Downham II

March lost by 64 runs

Little Downham visited March on Saturday where they produced a comprehensive victory over the home team.

Little Downham batted first and scored 128-9 off 32 overs. Top scorer was opener Hobbs (18) and only three of his colleagues managed to score more than 10 in support.

Wickets were taken by Hilliard (2-30), Jackman (2-5), Welcher (2-35) and Murphy (1-20).

In reply, March started well with opening partnership Hulley and L Hilliard making 53. But they were victims of a devastating spell of bowling from Little Downham's White who ended with figures of 5-9 off six overs and March collapsed to 64 all out.

Six March batsmen failed to score and no one else scored more than four runs. Crucially, Little Downham's bowlers gave away just four extras.

White was supported by Martin (2-27) and S Hobbs (3-8).

Sutton II v Pymoor

Pymoor won by 10 wickets

SUTTON II batted first and were bowled out for 60 in 33 overs. Top scorers were openers Faux and Robinson, who each made 11 runs, and who both fell to the bowling of Saberton, who took 3-26 off his 10 overs.

The next highest scorer was Robinson who made seven.

The Sutton batsmen had no answer to Pymoor's bowlers. Lawrence Hellsman took 4-13 off his 10 overs and Godsmark finished with 3-9 off six overs.

Pymoor's openers, Paul Ruskin (33) and Lester Potter (25), were largely untroubled by Sutton's bowling attack.

Of the six bowlers used, none managed to take a wicket as Pymoor cruised to 61 in just 13 overs, to win the match without loss.

Cambridge Jesters v Littleport II

Littleport II won by 129 runs

WITH the opposition at the top of the league, and Littleport's first team game cancelled, there was a chance for the second XI to impress.

Freestone (26) and Kimsey Jnr (23) made a solid start, before Dougan (87) came to the crease to produce a match-winning performance.

Holding on until the last over, and hitting 12 fours, Dougan controlled the innings for Littleport. Dickinson (23) smashed two huge sixes in a late cameo, enabling Littleport to pass 200 for the first time in the league this season.

Leonard (2-15) had an impressive return with the ball from his six-over spell. However, it was the introduction of Marsh (4-11) that sealed Jesters' fate, taking a wicket in each of his first four overs.

VILLAGE CHAMPIONSHIP

FORDHAM lost both their scheduled matches to the weather on Saturday but on the following day, in a thrilling and often tense encounter, the first team lost by just two runs in a National Village Championship group stage match against Upwood.

The advantage swung from one to team to the other all afternoon with the match ending in a nail-biting climax in the final over.

There was a sensational start when Graham Arnold removed two Upwood batsmen in successive deliveries in the very first over of the match.

The visitors struggled and lost half their side for 60 runs but Taffin (54) and Mitchell (18) led a revival as Upwood eventually reached a moderate total of 125.

Arnold took 3-14 in his nine overs with Chris Rule (3-21), Ian Jelleyman (2-23) and Carl Arnold (2-36) the other wicket takers.

Fordham made a steady start but lost three wickets in quick succession. Chris Rule (13) and Adam Cornwell (20) restored stability but when Rule was controversially dismissed, the pendulum swung Upwood's way once again.

Supported by Charles Dore, Fordham edged closer to their target but when skipper Graham Arnold lost successive partners, his side still required 12 runs with two overs and two wickets left.

Fordham scored six runs in the penultimate over but lost another wicket. In the final over, Arnold holed-out for a fine 39 after striking a boundary to leave his side just two runs adrift.
