ELY sailing club's Alan Bishop swept to victory in the sixth round of the laser series grand prix.

Despite battling against fierce competition and unremitting headwinds, Bishop kept his cool and took overall victory after a dramatic last race which saw as many as four competitors vying for the trophy.

With wind predicted at force three and growing over the course of the day, sailing proved to be a challenging affair with some spectacular views for the people gathered.

The first race saw some nimble manoeuvring between a number of the competitors but it was Alan Bishop and James Cully who eventually opened a lead and stamped their authority on the fleet, securing first and second place respectively.

After lunch the wind grew to force four allowing James Cully and Graham Hind to utilise their skills and leave the rest of the fleet battling for the lesser honours. The race finished with Graham Hind taking first, James Cully second and Alan Bishop third.

With just one race to go the scores were delicately poised and the stage was set for an epic tussle between the three outstanding candidates, Bishop, Cully and Hind.

As expected, the three raced into a commanding lead in the deciding race and were soon battling amongst themselves to secure the glory of top spot.

Though there was little to separate the gladiatorial jostling at the head of the race, it was Bishop who eventually got the better of his adversaries to take first place and the plaudits.
