Netball City of Ely under 16s started their year on a winning note as they thumped Royston 28-16.

New centre court duo Nadia Searle and Maisy Swan-Taylor combined superbly to drive the ball to shooters Laura Butcher – player of the match – and Rosie McGrath. By the end of the first quarter, Ely led by three goals and had extended this to seven goals by half-time.

Royston rallied in the third quarter but City’s defence also raised their game. Tara Gilbey made some important fingertip interceptions to interrupt Royston’s attacking flow while Lucy Wilkinson used her speed and agility to pressurise her opponent.

Katie Tune, unflappable at goalkeeper, preventing her player from moving freely.

In the last quarter, City prevented Royston from scoring a single goal.

Elsewhere, City of Ely I notched up a resounding 44-25 victory over MI7.

Jess Rolling made her debut and worked effortlessly with shooting duo Tovey and Nurse. City stay top of the Cambridgeshire County league. Emma Ayers was awarded player of the match for her impressive display and interceptions at goalkeeper.
