A RIOT at a boxing show in London has lead to four Mid Anglia boxers being given byes into semi-finals of the National CYP Championships.

The London Youth Club Championships at York Hall, Bethnal Green was abandoned after 12 of the 25 scheduled bouts and organisers have excluded the winners from the tournament.

The Sun newspaper has reported that thugs wielding machetes and wooden clubs invaded the famous east London venue.

Chatteris ABC promoter Matty Payne said: "It's so rare for something like this to happen in boxing. There was obviously an issue between two families. We have some great shows in Chatteris and this would never happen at one of our shows."

Chatteris ABC's Jordan Gill, Wisbech Boxing Club's Eli Frankham, Haddenham's Tyler Goodjohn and Alfie Smith from All Comers, Littleport, were due to fight the London winners in the quarter-finals but have now been given byes.

The semi-finals will be in Haslemere, Surrey on March 14.

Gill will fight Jake Heel from Broad Plaines ABC, Bristol, Frankham takes on Welsh fighter Sandro Ford.

Chatteris coach Paul Gill said: "It's great to see for Mid Anglia boys in the national semi-finals and I'd like to wish all the boys the best of luck.

"We have a great chance of there being a national champion from this area soon and we've not has success like that since the days of Dave "Boy" Green.

Saphire Lee, Wisbech and Eastern Counties secretary, said: "Eli's been training with the England squad but been struggling to find fight because he's now 91kg.

"But Sandro Ford sounds like a very good boxer. He's had eight wins from eight fights and six have been from knock outs. Eli needs a challenge like this.
