Title-winning City of Ely have set their sights on completing a perfect season.
Michael Sellers’ men have already been crowned Cambs Senior League Division Three champions and have reeled off 16 successive victories this summer.
They have only two games remaining and they are determined to complete a fairytale campaign.
Sellers said: “We’re over the moon to have won the title and I have to give credit to the whole squad for rising to the occasion every week.
“It has been a huge team effort and we are determined to keep pushing all the way to the end of what will hopefully be an unbeaten season.
“We knew we had brought in some good players and realistically we were hoping to challenge for promotion.
“We never expected to go unbeaten for so long and now we’re just hoping to finish the season off with two more wins.
“The club has struggled for the past 10 years and has been relegated on a couple of occasions during that time.
“We’re hoping we can climb back up the leagues as quickly as we can.”
City sealed the crown with a six-wicket at Ashwell on August 11 and there was no suggestion of them taking their feet off the gas last Saturday.
Sellers’ men extended their winning run to 16 matches with a five-wicket success against Isleham at the Paradise Centre last Saturday.
The visitors had no answer to City’s rapid bowling attack as they were dismissed or 132 with Chris Reay (2-15) making the early breakthroughs before Greg Blake (3-25) and Louis Cook (3-21) took over.
Skipper Sellers anchored City’s successful reply with 46 as they passed their victory in a shade under 30 overs.
City now host Girton this Saturday, 1pm, before bringing the curtain down on a glorious campaign at Wilburton on September 1.
Sellers added: “Our bowlers were fantastic against Isleham and their efforts made it a lot easier for the batsmen to get us over the line.
“We know we have two more games between ourselves and creating a little bit of history for the club.
“We’re good enough to win them both and it is a case of ensuring we continue to enjoy our cricket just as we have done all year.”
There could yet be a double cause for celebration with City 2nds still chasing title honours in Division Three North of the Cambs Junior League.
They are within five points of the promotion places with three games remaining after an eight-wicket triumph at Needingworth 2nds last Saturday.
Mark Deas bagged 4-17 as they dismissed their hosts for just 78 before Harvey Cook whacked an unbeaten 55.
The 2nds’ next assignment is at Witcham this Saturday.
