FORMER world-record holder and captain of the Great Britain athletics team, Ron Jones MBE, will be in Ely next weekend for the city's first Triathlon Relay and Aquathlon.
During Jones's 20-year athletics career, he competed in 38 internationals, two Olympic Games, three European Championships and four Commonwealth Games.
Jones was captain of the British team in Mexico `68, and ran the second leg of the world-record-breaking 4x100 yard relay team in 1963. After becoming the director of SportsAid Wales 10 years ago, he received an MBE in 2001 for services to sport and charity.
Jones is helping to organise the Triathlon Relay and Aquathlon, at the King's Junior School next weekend, is refereeing both events, and will be presenting the medals at the end.
Jones moved to Sutton 18 months ago and became involved after hearing about the event from, Head of the King's Junior School, Tony Duncan.
Jones said: "As soon as I heard about this event I wanted to get involved. I've been hugely impressed by the enthusiasm around here and I'm excited about the whole day. I'm sure it's going to be very special and I hope that more people get involved.
