Basketball The mayor of Ely paid a visit to one of Ely’s newest sports clubs last Thursday, the Ely Flames Basketball Club.

The club was set up by Mirek Kaznowski, a keen basketball player and Ely resident originally from Poland, where the sport is much more popular.

The Flames started up with the help of a grant from the City of Ely Council and the mayor was on hand last Thursday to see how the money had been invested.

The club is aiming to provide free opportunities for local youngster to participate in the sport, with training sessions taking place most weeks on a Thursday from 6.30-8pm at King’s Ely.

The sessions are open to any players regardless of ability level or background – so long as they live in the vicinity of the city. The team is a registered member of England Basketball and competes in the Peterborough Basketball League’s u18’s division.

Mirek said: “Initially, I was expecting it to be a challenge, but this was made so much easier thanks to the support of everyone involved. King’s provides us with free use of their court and equipment, City of Ely Council came up with the funding we needed for our running costs, whilst King’s Lynn Nets – a more established team – is always on hand to provide guidance.”
