A KEEN golfer from Ely has booked his place at a prestigious tournament in Portugal after coming through a tough regional heat.

Barry Broad, a local painter and decorator, took on 34 other competitors from across the eastern region in the Dulux Decorator Trophy at the Langdon Hills golf course in Essex and came through in second-place with a stableford points score of 36, securing him a berth at the grand final.

Mr Broad will now travel to Penina in Portugal in September to take on winners from 10 other regional events which have taken place across the country recently.

Barry said: "I had a wonderful day and thoroughly enjoyed the evening presentation dinner. I still can't believe I actually won through - I just hope I can hit similar shots in Portugal!"
