PREMIER LEAGUE CUP FINAL

Histon A 3 Littleport Town 2

LITTLEPORT Town led twice in their attempt to lift the Premier League Cup on Bank Holiday Monday, but were eventually thwarted by a young and fit Histon side.

'Port established a 10th minute lead through Nigel Smith, who scored on the rebound after a Dave Beeton header had been blocked on the line.

Matt Glass levelled with a 20th minute shot that just dipped under the crossbar, but Littleport went back in front a quarter of an hour later.

Will Ludbrooke made a break down the wing, and after cutting inside, fired his shot across the goal and inside the far post to make the interval score 2-1.

Histon dominated the first 20 minutes of the second half, during which time they wrested the initiative with two goals.

Glass grabbed his second to equalise, and substitute Zac Knight-Percival scored with virtually his first touch for what proved to be the winner.

Both teams created chances after that, but neither side could break through again.

PREMIER LEAGUE

LITTLEPORT'S league programme concluded with a thumping 8-1 victory at Sawston United, with striker Will Ludbrooke helping himself to a six-goal haul.

He was joined on the scoresheet by Chris Lupson and Michael Ward, as 'Port finished the campaign in a very respectable fourth place.

Cottenham United meanwhile leap-frogged Fordham into sixth place by winning Saturday's encounter 3-2.

SENIOR DIVISION A

CHAMPIONS Ely City Reserves finished seven points clear of Hundon after winning their last two matches by 3-0 scorelines - at West Wratting and then at home to Hemingfords United.

Richie Murfitt's hat-trick sealed the midweek win - and the title itself - at Wratting, and the same player was on target in Saturday's success against Hemingfords which completed a 25-match unbeaten league run for the Robins.

Jamie Smith was also on target, and so was goalkeeper Leigh Follen with his first Saturday goal of the season, from the penalty spot.

Soham Town Rangers Reserves meanwhile lost 4-2 at Hundon, before completing their programme with a 2-1 home victory against Lakenheath.

DIVISION 1B

SOHAM United have failed in their bid to stave off relegation from Senior Division B, and they will effectively be replaced in the Kershaw League by Littleport Town Reserves, who finished second in Division 1B.

They lost their final game 7-4 at home to lowly Buckden - ending a run of 10 successive league wins - but had already secured their position in the top two.

Neil Cullum, Michael Shay, Andrew Smart and substitute James Kent were the players on target for the hosts.

DIVISION 2B

ELY City A won a 13-goal thriller against Newmarket White Lion in their final game, but still missed out on a top-two placing to Wisbech St Mary by virtue of an inferior goal difference.

Robert Parker (2), Steve Tuck (2), Jamie Gayfer, Matt Brodie and Stuart Seekings were the goal-scorers in City's remarkable 7-6 victory.

The result meant that Ely have won their last nine league outings, but that still wasn't quite enough to overhaul a Wisbech side that won their last match 3-1 at Over Sports Reserves.

Witchford '96 finished up a respectable sixth after beating Hemingfords United Reserves 6-1, and Sutton United ended up fourth despite losing their final outing at home to relegated Isleham United.

They led 4-2 at half-time with goals from Matthew Keys (2), Jamie Peacock - a recent signing from Haddenham Rovers - and Peter Wallace, but conceded three in the second half to go down 5-4.

Andy Marriott (2), Nick Samuels and Danny Binns got the visitors on level terms before Thomas Sheldrick grabbed an unlikely winner.

Sutton had earlier faced Cambridge University Press Reserves in the final of the Junior Challenge Cup, but went down 3-1, despite taking an early lead.

Courtney Harrison was the man on target with a third minute strike from the edge of the penalty area, but Press levelled before half-time and scored twice more in the second period to clinch the trophy.

DIVISION 3B

THE Vine are champions of Division 3B, but with eight minutes to go at Soham United Reserves it didn't even look as if they would be promoted.

In midweek they had been held 1-1 by Lakenheath Reserves as Mark Higginbottom's opener was cancelled out with 10 minutes remaining, and that meant that nothing less than victory would suffice in their final match at Soham.

The Vine played well enough, but missed a host of chances in the first half while United made the most of their opportunities to establish a 2-0 lead.

With eight minutes remaining The Vine were still trailing by two goals, and when Karl Spencer's effort appeared to be cleared from behind the goal-line it seemed as if they were destined to lose.

But moments later James Angier bustled his way through from the edge of the box to pull a goal back, and Kinder Mann then made it 2-2 after a route-one move involving Jez Cutter and goalkeeper James Nuttall.

With time running out a pass from Dan Cowley released Spencer behind the Soham defence, and he managed to squeeze his shot past the goalkeeper for a dramatic late winner which clinched the title.

Pymoor FC meanwhile dropped to fourth after losing for the third time in a row at home to Wisbech St Mary Reserves, going down 6-1 to their third-placed rivals.

Little Downham Swifts lost 4-2 at Somersham Town Reserves and 6-3 at Dullingham, but escaped relegation by virtue of their goal difference.

Fordham Reserves finished their campaign with an odd-goal-in-five defeat at Cottenham United A.

DIVISION 4B

MEPAL Sports were crowned champions on Saturday, but were run very close by a March Rangers side who needed to win their final game 10-0.

Sports players watched anxiously as March - playing with five in midfield and three up front at Sutton United Reserves - led 4-0 at half-time.

The hosts battled to stem the tide and goalkeeper David Frear made several important saves, eventually restricting March to a 7-0 win, just three goals short of the tally needed to snatch the title from Mepal's grasp.

The eventual champions had failed to clinch the single point they needed in midweek, going down by the only goal of the game against local rivals Ely Crusaders.

Ely then lost their final game 4-2 at Exning Athletic, but Haddenham Rovers Reserves secured a remarkable fifth place by defeating West Row Gunners Reserves 2-0.

Robert Baxter and leading scorer Phil Harle were the players on target for Rovers, who won 13 of their last 15 matches in moving from the bottom of the table into the top five.

They overtook Burwell Swifts in the process, owing to the fact that their local rivals could only draw 0-0 with Willingham Reserves in their final outing.

Swavesey Institute Reserves avoided relegation by virtue of their 3-1 win at Sutton United Reserves, with Jamie Peacock's goal scant consolation for the beaten hosts.

DIVISION 5B

THE Vine Reserves came third in the bottom section as Mark Finbow's hat-trick helped them to a 7-0 victory at the expense of Coldham United.

Justin Challis grabbed a brace, and The Vine's other goals went to Sam Morgan and substitute Giles Hennebry.

Cottenham United B were ahead of The Vine at the start of play, but dropped to fourth after suffering a shock 3-2 reverse at Little Downham Swifts Reserves.

That result was certainly better than the 9-2 mauling Downham had received at the hands of Dataracks Elite in midweek.

Littleport Town A also lost in the week, 4-1 at Cottenham United B, but won on Saturday at home to Outwell Swifts Reserves.

Lee Yearn (2), Luke Butcher, Daniel Hawkes and Mark Yardy were the players on target in a 5-0 win, with Nathan Bennett the consolation scorer at Cottenham.

Isleham United Reserves tumbled 4-1 at home to Fenstanton Reserves, and Wicken Amateurs rued an early Josh Woodroffe miss as they lost by the odd goal in seven at Lode Reserves.

Johnny Gammon - usually a goalkeeper - set up Jamie Palmer for a neat 23rd minute opener, but Lode redressed the balance before the interval and then led 3-1.

Palmer reduced the arrears by lifting the ball over the advancing keeper for his 30th goal of the season, but Lode struck again to put the match beyond recall.

Neil Bulman set up fellow substitute Ben Read for the 16-year-old's first senior goal to make it 4-3 at the final whistle.
