LITTLEPORT Lions Korfball Club will be hosting a grand summer tournament later this month as part of their 10th anniversary celebrations.

More than 100 players have played for the team since it was set up in 2001 as the first team outside of Cambridge in the Cambridgeshire Korfball League, and to celebrate the milestone, the club is inviting all players - past and present to dust off their kits and play in the upcoming tournament.

The Lions’ first competitive game back in October 2001 was an exciting affair ending 6-6 against Cambridge Tigers - Lions scoring an equaliser in the dying seconds. Seven of the original 12 that played in that game still play for the current squad, backed up by newer players of varying experience. Lions’ finished the current season putting together an impressive run and storming to the Division 2 title. The last 10 years have seen more than 100 players, three team kits, 10 qualified coaches, nine qualified referees and 2947 league goals scored (plus many more in cup competitions and tournaments).

Because this year’s summer tournament marks the tenth anniversary, Lions will be donating the profits made from the event to charity. The tournament is run over two days - this year being the bank holiday weekend at the end of May (28-29). The Korfball will take place on the sports field at Littleport Leisure centre during both days and there will be a ceilidh/disco on Saturday night - open to everyone. Tickets available on the door for 3.50, again, with all the profits going to Teenage Cancer Trust.
