A LITTLEPORT youngster produced a flawless performance to win gold at the Midlands Open Judo Championships in Walsall.
Andrew Pickerill, 16, came through with flying colours in the under-90kg category of the competition, beating every opponent he faced whilst scoring the maximum of 'Ippon' in every bout.
Coach Ros Edwards, said: "I was privileged to support Andrew on his way to glory in the Midlands this month and, with Andrew's other coach, Ray, to a British Championships Bronze medal in October last year which earned him a place on the England Squad for 2009."
Another member of Littleport Judo Club, Nicholas Johnson, also competed at the championships in the under-66kgs category, but his bid for gold was cut short through injury. Johnson began brightly in his first bout but had to withdraw from the event after receiving medical advice.
Littleport Judo Club is holding an event for under-12s on Sunday March 1. New members are welcome to join the club, which meets at Littleport Leisure Centre. More information is available from Ray on 01553 763973.
