Ely City boss Brady Stone described the Unwin Ground pitch as “the worst he had ever seen” after hours of torrential rain caused yet another Robins game to be postponed.

Stone’s men were relishing the visit of league-toppers Wivenhoe Town with a view to ending their season-long unbeaten run and boosting their challenge for the title, but the fixture fell victim to the sodden weather conditions and was called off on early on Saturday morning.

Despite the disappointment of missing yet another league game, Robins boss Brady Stone believes that calling the match off was the correct decision.

He said: “It was the right call to postpone the game. I’ve never seen the pitch so bad, both as a manager and a player. Two thirds of the pitch was under water.

“Obviously we’re disappointed because we always want to play, especially last week as it was first against second, but the pitch wasn’t playable.”

The Robins’ clash with Wivenhoe wasn’t the only East Cambridgeshire game to be affected by the weather, as a busy schedule in the Cambs League was also hit heavily by the conditions with dozens of cancellations.

The Robins, who are currently second in the league, were hoping to reduce the 11-point gap that Essex side Wivenhoe had on them in their clash but Stone says his side will use the break to train ahead of their next game.

“We’ll train this week and look to keep fresh ahead of our next game,” he said.

Weather-allowing, Ely City will hope to bag a fourth consecutive league victory when they travel to Dereham Town Reserves in two days’ time.

The Norfolk side’s second-string are struggling in the league this season, sitting 15th in the Thurlow Nunn Division One.

Their less-than impressive home form, which has seen them take maximum points only twice on their own turf this season, will excite the Robins, but Brady Stone says his side cannot afford to be complacent.

“We’ll need to work hard against Dereham,” he said.

“They’re a reserve team so it means they’re young and will have pace.

“We need to stop them playing football and we’ll hopefully pick up the three points.”

Ely’s have hit a purple patch in the winter months, having lost only one game since the end of November and shutting out their opponents in their last three games.
