TWO dramatic injury time goals rescued a point for Ely City on Saturday and manager Dennis Lightning hopes that they will kick-start his team's season.

There has been no lack of entertainment or goals in City's games but the Ely boss is keen to plug the holes in a porous defence.

A seven-day approach has been made for Newmarket's Russell Flitton as Lightning aims to address his defensive shortcomings, which were highlighted in Saturday's 3-3 draw against Whitton United.

Robbie Mason put the Robins 1-0 up after just eight minutes but the visitors were back on level terms following an expensive mix-up in the Ely defence.

Indecision in the back line resulted in keeper Lee Pacey colliding with a forward. Pacey was shown a straight red card and the scores were levelled from the penalty spot.

The visitors went 2-1 up before the break and a third goal seemed to have given Whitton the points.

However, two Ben Lawrence throw-ins in two injury-time minutes resulted in chaos in the Whitton area.

From the set pieces, Lee James and Dave Daniels were on hand to nod the ball home from close range and rescue a point for Ely.

Lightning said: "It was a crazy game and on paper, it was a good result against a much-fancied side but I was disappointed.

"We gave away two bad goals and there was a blatant handball in the build-up to the other.

"I pushed everyone forward after their third goal and it worked but I don't know why we are conceding so many goals.

"We have lads who have played regularly in the Ridgeons Premier but I think that it is taking one or two players time to adapt to the physical nature of the First Division.

"We have missed Brady Stone and Dean Blackman in defence and Tony Brown picked-up an injury so we are down to our bare bones.

He added: "But we are too good a team to be in the bottom half of the table and I am hoping that those two late goals will kick-start our season."

Stone may be back in the squad for Saturday's Ridgeons First Division match at Hadleigh United. Blackman is suspended and Brown is a doubt for the game.
