Late Drama Seals Ely Win

AN injury time goal from Robins captain Simon Warren, snatched three points for Ely City against Wroxham on Saturday.

With just seconds remaining and the game seemingly destined to end a draw, skipper Warren sent the home support into raptures with a deft header which eluded the despairing grasp of the visiting goalkeeper.

The win, the Robins third in succession, moves them up into ninth place in the Ridgeons Premier League with Saturday's trip to high-flyers Kirkley and Pakefield their last game of a good season.

The match itself started with much promise for Denis Lightning's men as striker Richard Chadwick found himself through on goal after latching on to a floated ball. Fortunately for the visitors however, Chawick's cute lob sailed narrowly over the bar with the goal begging.

Wroxham refused to be overawed by Ely's fine start though, and they soon clicked into gear, earning a penalty after 10 minutes as Ely's Brady Stone felled an onrishing striker. The Yachtsmen's Shaun Howes made no mistake from the spot.

Ely huffed and puffed in the aftermath of the goal but could find no way through against a well organised Wroxham defence, which ensured the visitors remained in front at the break.

Ely started with a far greater sense of urgency in the second-half and Dave Smith went close with just two minutes on the clock as he fired goalwards from just outside the box.

A period of sustained pressure from the Robins ultimately led to the equaliser minutes after the hour mark as Robbie Mason smashed home from 20 yards.

The game began to peter out in the aftermath of the goal as both sides seemed content to settle for a point.

With just seconds remaining however, Ely stole all three points thanks to Warren's header from a Ben Lawrence long throw.
