THIS week we launch the last of our four categories for the Ely Standard Sport Awards 2008, and tell you how to enter or nominate someone for the awards.

Award Category: Adult Achievement (men) - Sponsor: The Atrium Club

Criteria: Achievement throughout the year, sacrifice and commitment to a particular sport and future potential.

Award Category: Adult Achievement (women) - Sponsor: The Atrium Club

Criteria: Achievement throughout the year, sacrifice and commitment to a particular sport and future potential.

A word from our sponsor.

"Situated in the heart of Ely, the Atrium Club has been providing the people of Ely and the surrounding areas with a first class heath and fitness facility for the best part of 17 years.

An element to the success of the club is that as well as the very professional facilities that we have always provided, the atmosphere has always been a very warm and friendly one. A place where the members not only benefit from the changes to their health and fitness, but also helps them develop a new way of life. The variety of different exercise and nutrition plans always helps members keep focussed even after long periods of time at the club and with an up-to-date and fully equipped gym; a studio for classes including boxercise and yoga, there is also a comprehensive wet area with a Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and pool.

We are always trying to keep up with the times and we were the first in the area to introduce vibration training in the form of a power plate. It is a top training tool for many athletes and is used in other walks of life to reduce cellulite, relax aching muscles and can help conditions such as arthritis."

Award Category: Veteran Award - Sponsor: Petrou Brothers

Criteria: Ability, achievement, dedication and commitment (all relevant to age) plus, career history.

A word from our sponsor

"Petrou Brothers in Market Place, Ely is proud to be sponsoring the Veteran Category of the Ely Standard's first sports awards. This is the perfect category for our business because although fish and chips is loved by all generations, it's my more mature customers that have a bigger attachment to the nation's favourite meal. In their younger years it was the original and only fast food. The older generation always tell me stories, often with a romantic attachment to fish and chips. Stories of eating them by the sea when they met their partners or how they would always get some on the way back from watching a football match, and so on...I could sit and listen to them for hours. The winner of the Veteran Category will also be treated to a slap-up meal for themselves and some of their friends as a celebration of their success."

Mark Petrou.

Award Category: The Liam Fairhurst Award For Sporting Endeavour - Sponsor: The Ely Standard

Criteria: To recognise outstanding sporting endeavour. Someone who has achieved against the odds or in difficult circumstances.

"There can't be many people in the country, let alone the East Cambridgeshire area, who are not aware of Liam Fairhurst and the courage he has shown in coping with his cancer. This award does not aim to make comparisons with Liam and his immense courage, but seeks to reflect some of the inspiration and enthusiasm he displays for life, and which ultimately inspires others. We want to hear about anyone, male or female, adult or child, who has achieved in sport in difficult circumstances. Someone who has worked through pain or injury to perform. An individual who has set an example through commitment and endeavour and who refuses to give up."

Debbie Davies.
