JUNIOR RUGBY

ELY Under 9s took part in Wenden's Ambo Festival on Sunday (March 28). The courageous team displayed some outstanding rugby skills facing some tough opposition when drawn in the stronger pool. They came away with their heads head high after scoring more tries than they conceded.

Ely 10 Shelford A 5

The Under 9s won their first match against Shelford A who had very robust defence. Ely started well, getting the ball forward, but Shelford gained possession and eventually managed to score. In the second half Ely defended well and took the chances when they arose with Matthew Melloy dodging through the opposition to score both of Ely's tries.

Ely 10 Saffron Walden 10

The young Tigers impressed in this match by playing with great spirit and drive when things weren't going their way. Saffron Walden played an assertive game, but not to be intimidated Ely played admirably, looking the better team deserving a win. Saffron Walden went into half time one try up, Ely came back fighting with Matthew scoring two fantastic tries. George Freeman made a tremendous tackle to prevent Saffron Walden scoring, only for them to equalise on the final whistle.

Ely 0 Royston A 15

A determined Ely held their own against a talented Royston side - the eventual festival winners. A couple of times Ely were close to scoring but couldn't quite get the ball over the line. Ely had to come together as a team with some first rate support play from Erin Wright and Ralph Lawrence. A challenging match for Ely who never stopped battling; some excellent defending by the Tigers made it a very exciting match to watch.

Ely 25 Shelford B 0

Another thrilling game with Jack Laud putting Ely ahead straight away. Max Hull, on his debut for Ely, made a magnificent tackle to stop Shelford scoring. A brilliant pass from Robert Armer led to Matthew scoring. A fine series of passes from the line-out by Ben Gamble, Kallum Mulhall and Josh Smith set up Jack's second try. Matthew side stepped past the opposition to score another brace of tries.
