PREMIER DIVISION

THE wind was the only winner on Saturday as Fordham and Littleport Town Reserves drew 0-0.

Rob Foreman hit a post with an effort in the third minute of time added on, but Port boss Dave Cullum felt that neither side deserved to claim all three points. "It would have been an injustice really," said Cullum afterwards.

Both teams worked hard, but Foreman's shot against the post was Port's closest attempt and the nearest Fordham came to scoring was through Dan Langley and Jamie Palmer.

SENIOR DIVISION A

Alex Irvine blitzed Brampton with a first half hat-trick as Soham Town Rangers Reserves took all three points in Saturday's league encounter.

He was joined on the scoresheet by Paul Jones and Andrew Short, and although Soham had the wind at their backs in the second half, they failed to extend their advantage and Brampton pulled one back to make the final score 5-2.

SENIOR DIVISION B

Despite a relatively poor performance, Ely City Reserves kept up the pressure on Fulbourn Institute Reserves at the top of the top of the table with a 1-0 victory at bottom-of-the-table Great Chesterford.

Steve Pollard scrambled the ball home midway through the first half, and soon afterwards City were grateful for a penalty save from stand-in goalkeeper Lee Abbs which prevented Chesterford from equalising.

Soham United look sure to be relegated after crashing 5-1 against fellow strugglers Sawston United Reserves, but Ely Crusaders improved their hopes of a top-three finish by slamming fifth-placed Debden 4-0 at home.

Jim Brown opened the scoring after 30 minutes, and he then doubled Ely's advantage at the start of the second half.

Simon Farrow made it 3-0 with a diving header, and Brown struck again to complete his hat-trick towards the finish.

DIVISION 1B

Littleport Town Reserves look even less likely to avoid the drop after taking only one point from last week's encounters with promotion-chasing Godmanchester Rovers Reserves.

They showed spirit during a 2-0 midweek defeat, and were thankful for a Clive Lee cracker as they shared the spoils during Saturday's 2-2 encounter.

DIVISION 2B

Ely City A lost 2-0 at Needingworth United Reserves on Saturday, but in midweek they staged a late comeback to take all three points at Somersham Town Reserves.

City trailed 1-0 following Adam Scott's dismissal, but a header from Lee Abbs got the visitors back on terms and Neil McKnight secured victory by converting a Steve Pollard cross with two minutes remaining.

Somersham also had a player sent off, but it was City who finished the strongest and deserved to win.

Isleham United faced local rivals Sutton United in the same section, after after an evenly contested first half it was the hosts who eventually ran out winners by the odd goal in five.

Matthew Keys and Sam Oliver scored for Sutton, but goals from Stuart Freeland, Malcolm Watson and Danny Binns eventually earned the hosts a 3-2 win.

DIVISION 3B

The Vine may have wrecked Witchford '96's promotion hopes by beating them 3-0 at home on Saturday.

Sam Morgan was outstanding as he marked Witchford's danger-man Aaron Spencer out of the game, and Grant Spencer broke the deadlock when latching on to a cross from Jon Cutter after 22 minutes.

Cutter added a second goal after 65 minutes following a long clearance from goalkeeper James Nuttall, and Spencer made the points safe with 17 minutes of the match remaining.

Soham United Reserves crashed 11-3 at home to Cottenham United A, and Little Downham Swifts were also beaten at home as they went down by the odd goal in five against Brampton Reserves.

Clinton Cornwell was on target for Fordham Reserves in their match against title-favourites Newmarket White Lion, but his side were eventually on the wrong end of a 7-1 scoreline.

DIVISION 4B

Burwell Swifts came from benind to overcome local rivals Exning Athletic in a windswept 4B encounter on Saturday.

Ollie Williams bundled the ball over the line to equalise after 15 minutes, and he then fired home a second goal after latching on to a through ball from midfield.

Williams completed his hat-trick after good work from Tom Thatcher, and he added a fourth goal before half-time with a fine shot that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Exning hit the woodwork in the second half and then rapped the woodwork with a late penalty, but it was eventually the hosts that ran out winners by a 4-2 margin.

Richard Martin and Giles Peacock (penalty) exchanged goals as Sutton United Reserves and Mepal Sports drew 1-1, but the news was not so good for the other local sides in this section.

Bottom of the table Wicken Amateurs lost 2-1 at Milton A, and Haddenham Rovers Reserves were slaughtered 8-0 in their match at Willingham Reserves.

Ely Crusaders Reserves briefly led 2-0 in their clash with title-chasing Wisbech St Mary Reserves, but they eventually went down 7-2 as the hosts clinched the championship.

SUNDAY SOCCER

Ely Park Rangers look to have secured the Halls of Cambridge League Division 2A title following a 2-0 victory against their closest rivals Cambridge Magpies.

Dave Cornwell opened the scoring by nodding home Chris Lupson's cross, and Andrew Francis made it 2-0 before half-time as the visitors rarely threatened to make a game of it.

AFC Witchford saw their 4A promotion hopes dashed by an single-goal defeat at Grove on Sunday.

Matt Monteith scored at the start of the second half and goalkeeper Robbie Scarrow scored with a massive clearance from his own penalty area, but the hosts had already struck three times in the opening 45 minutes and that proved sufficient to earn them all three points.

In the same section Wicken Maids Head lost 6-0 at home to Cambridge Cosmos Reserves.

Meanwhile in the Senior Division reigning champions Triple-S went down by the only goal of the game at Sawston Keys.
