A SLICE of luck is all that separates Ely City from a lengthy winning run, Alan Alsop said this week.

The Robins boss has seen his side suffer two defeats in less than a week, both of which came as a result of injury time goals, but he maintains that his players can turn things around and are only a stroke of luck away from a good run of results.

“I can’t fault the effort and the performance of the players,” he said. “They are enjoying playing their football and they have really settled in well to the new system we have been playing.

“We have dominated recent games but have just been missing that bit of luck. I believe that football is 50 per cent luck and I think that ours will start to turn around.”

On Tuesday night the Robins conceded two goals in five frantic minutes to lose 2-1 at Newmarket Town. Ben Lawrence put the Robins in front midway through the second half as he scrambled home from a corner.

The lead last just 10 minutes though, and Newmarket pulled level with five minutes remaining. Despite redoubling their efforts in defence however, Ely conceded in the second minute of injury time as a floated ball was nodded home by an offside-looking Newmarket forward to seal the three points.

Alsop’s men suffered a similar fate against Leiston on Saturday as visiting defender Mark Goldfinch struck deep into injury time to deny Ely of a share of the spoils.
