MICHAEL Simpson left Wroxham's Trafford Park ground in an ambulance on Saturday after suffering serious facial injuries in a 51st minute collision with home skipper Justin Fox.

Simpson - who was knocked unconscious - swallowed his tongue, lost two teeth, split his lip open and broke his nose in the incident. He was attended by paramedics and was taken to Norwich Hospital before being discharged later than evening.

Soham had started the day in second place in the Premier Division table, but suffered a 3-0 defeat that enabled their opponents to move to the summit ahead of them.

The first 25 minutes was evenly contested, but the hosts gradually gained the upper hand and went ahead just before half-time.

Rangers goalkeeper Lea Jordan failed to deal with a corner, and the loose ball was quickly dispatched for the opening goal.

Wroxham appeared to sit back at the start of the second half, but Simpson's injury led to a delay of almost 10 minutes.

Substitute Scott Carter missed a one-on-one chance shortly after the resumption, and then came what Rangers boss Ian Benjamin described as "the turning point of the game."

Andy Furnell burst clear behind the home defence, but the referee stopped play so that a Wroxham player could receive attention for an injury. "It was a shocking decision," fumed Benjamin afterwards.

Wroxham doubled their advantage a couple of minutes later, and added a deflected third goal in the closing stages.

"I wouldn't say they were three goals better than us," concluded the Soham manager. "We just didn't perform, especially going forward.
