A VERY good turnout of riders was greeted by timekeepers Brian Cooper and Roy Benstead for Ely and District Cycling Club's Tuesday evening event last week.
There were some fine performances from all who took part, most notably Andy Clark, who is getting faster all the time, recording 25:05.
He was pipped by just three seconds with an excellent performance from St Ives clubman Andy Bright.
Others making headway included Carly Wilson and Celia Whitechurch, who both fought it out for best lady of the evening, with Carly just getting ahead with 29:57 to Celia's 30:18.
Ely clubman Ray Jolly made the best of the good weather with a strong 29:30 over the 10-mile Witchford/Sutton course, while the likes of Steve Presland, Richard Winrow, Kevin Spalding and experienced roadman Malcolm Robinson all pushed themselves to the limit against the clock to record good times.
The future of the sport looks to be in good hands with Harvey Leadbeater and David Block joining Carly Wilson to swell the younger ranks, Harvey this time taking the much prized 'lantern rouge' and showing that the younger generation are a force to be reckoned with.
A mere two seconds separated Colin Whitechurch and Geoff Brewster at the top with 23:36 and 23:34 respectively, marking a return to form for Colin and a wake-up call for Geoff making for some exciting results for the remainder of the season.
The next event for the club will be on June 6, a 25-mile course from Witchford to Chatteris and back.
Riders should meet at the Witchford Pavilion on BedWell Hey Lane in Witchford at least 15 minutes before the official start time of 7.30pm.
If you're a younger rider or just new to the sport you can opt for 10 miles instead. Everyone is welcome to go along and have a go, just bring a bike.
