Wentworth boxer Tyler ‘El Tornado’ Goodjohn says he is “hugely excited” to step back into the ring to try and claim the vacant English welterweight title.

The 24-year-old will be hoping to become two-weight English champion by defeating Johnny Garton at the York Hall in London on Saturday March 19.

Goodjohn, who fights out of St Ives Boxing Academy, was crowned the English light-welterweight champion in 2014, and is now gunning for welterweight glory against Garton.

“I’m hugely excited - I couldn’t have asked for a better fight,” he said.

“It perhaps came sooner than I thought in terms of I’ve only just moved up into the weight class, but it shows that my name carries weight in boxing and everyone wants to see it.”

‘El Tornado’ will take on Peckham-based Garton - who boasts a record of 16 wins out of 18 fights - but Goodjohn isn’t phased by the 28-year-old’s previous bouts.

Goodjohn said: “I’ve got loads of respect for Johnny; he only has the one loss on his record and is an established name in the Division through winning the Southern area and defending it three times, but I’ve been in against current British and Commonwealth champions so it won’t phase me.

“I’ve been in the lion’s den away from home and I thrive off big fights. I couldn’t get up for my last fight in all honestly because I was expected to win it, so I need to be in 50/50 fights to perform.”

Goodjohn is known for his explosive style and hopes he’ll be able to show it off in two month’s time, but also says he will be more methodical against Garton if necessary.

He said: “Johnny has a very similar style to myself - he likes to mix it up but has also shown he can box on the back foot. I’m obviously hoping it’s going to be fireworks because that’s what I enjoy most, but I’ll be prepared for a chess match if need be.”
