THE return of Tommy Hugo to the Ely attack following a short spell at Cambridge City produced a brace of goals and inspired the home side to a 2-0 win over Sudbury on Saturday.

Ely, also strengthen by the return of Dan Jolley, Fez Abbas and Stu Clarke produced some flowing hockey and opened the scoring midway through the first half as picked up where he had left off for Ely.

Continued pressure on the Sudbury defence produced some outstanding reaction saves by the visiting keeper to keep the score line 1-0 at the break.

The second half continued in a similar vain with Sudbury making little progress into the Ely circle as a result of the endless midfield energy of Rutledge and Clarke and bolstered by Julian Palmer in central defence.

A short heated exchange of views with the umpire by two of the Sudbury players resulted in yellow cards suspensions for the visiting team but Ely failed to capitalize on the advantage, but Ely's Dan Jolley soon joined them on the sideline after tactically breaking down play.

Ely extended their lead midway through the second half, a sublime cross field aerial ball by Joel Gilmour found Dan Jolley on the edge of the Sudbury circle and with the visiting keeper stranded a simple pass around the keeper for Hugo to complete the win for Ely.
