King’s Ely’s 13A cricket team kicked off their season in the best possible way by roaring to success in the Witham Hall School Tournament.

The annual tournament sees cricket teams from schools around the region go head-to-head, and King’s began their competition against St John’s of Cambridge.

King’s bowlers starred, and bowled their opponents out for just 59 runs from 12 overs.

Freddie Fairey and Ben Marshall led the chase with the bat and took them to a nine wicket victory.

Up next for Ely were Fenland rivals Wisbech, with King’s electing to bowl first again.

Some pacey bowling restricted Wisbech to just 55 runs, and Fairey and Marshall easily surpassed their total when coming in to bat.

In their final encounter, King’s took on Witham Hall and were sent into to bad first.

Fairey looked assured at the crease and he helped Ely to a tournament-high total of 85.

Ely were too skilful with the ball once again, and took only 11 overs to dismiss Witcham Hall and return to King’s with the trophy – much to the delight of director of sport and head of cricket, Ben Edmondson.

He said: “The boys displayed an extremely good team performance across all three games with every individual doing their bit in each one of our victories.

“It was enjoyable to witness their hard work in the winter nets paying off on the field.”
